You have come ashore on this beach covered in pebble stones. You have just crossed the channel in a very small boat, with a ferryman supplied by a monastery near Calais. It was a terrifying crossing. Many of you have never been to sea, or been transported across such a wide expanse of water, and almost certainly never experienced the awful weather that arose during your crossing.

You are all very sick, very wet, very hungry and very tired. You all have probably come from different countries in EUROPE; France, Belgium, Germany, Spain – even Italy.

You have walked many, many miles, some possibly carrying their sick, and relying on the goodness and hospitality of European monasteries on the way for food and a sheltered sleepover.

We take you back to the 13th century on the shores of Dover seafront. We then ask you to do something rather strange, something we will explain to you on the day, because it is a secret!

Your attention is drawn to the significant difference in the view of the town from the present day shore-side, against how it most probably looked 800 years ago.

Now the slow walk, up through the town whilst having various features and buildings that were present at the time pointed out to you with explanations.

The walk takes in the viewing of the remains of the Priory of St Martin of Tours with reference to an aerial view of the land in the locality, displayed on hand-outs given to you at the beginning of the Experience.

TLastly we move across to the Chapel of St Edmund where you will be delighted by an historic ‘tour’ of the chapel’s history to the present day.

The Chapel relies entirely on donations. We do hope you will be as generous with your donation as the time we have given to you for your enjoyment.

The whole Experience takes about 1.5 hours.
